چکیده

To measure the small amounts of iodine in tissues, organelles, and subfractions it is necessary to use very sensitive and specific analytical methods. Neutron activation analysis meets these criteria; the measurement of lZ81 after irradiation of the naturally occurring isotope, 1271, has a sensitivity of about 0.08 nanogram (12). However, neutron activation analysis has the disadvantage of requiring instrumentation not generally available in biological laboratories; given the availability of a nuclear reactor, &counters or -y-spectrometers have generally been necessary to measure radioactivity and ensure specificity. We have measured nanogram quantities of iodine in small biological samples using a combination of postirradiation extractions to separate Cl and Br (1,2) with timed counting of the resultant lzsI in aqueous solution, utilizing Cerenkov radiation.

Cerenkov Counting Performance on the TopCount Microplate Scintillation and Luminescence Counter

The TopCount Microplate Scintillation and Luminescence Counter has been widely used in biopharmaceutical assays involving both radionuclide and luminescence measurement. A new feature allows the use of TopCount for measuring a high energy beta emitter such as P by Cerenkov counting, a well-known measurement technique that has the main advantage of not requiring the addition of scintillation coc...

Measurement of iodine concentration in biological material.

Determination of iodine in biological material presents technical problems because of the large amounts of organic material present and because the concentration of iodine is often low. Many workers have used a chloric acid-digestion procedure (1), but this is tedious, and Richmond (2) found it less satisfactory for accurate measurement of fecal iodine than for determining iodine in serum or ur...

Shielding studies on a total-body neutron activation facility

Background: Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is known as a non-invasive technique capable of measuring elemental concentration in voluminous samples in a short period of time. Also it is a valuable diagnostic tool for total body elemental measurements. 252Cf and 241Am-Be sources which are usually used in this method, generate not only neutrons, but also emit high-energy and unwa...

Determination of the flux of a neutron radioisotope source through gold activation method

Introduction: In recent years, the use of neutrons has increased in various fields such as medicine and industry. One of the important applications of neutrons is in medical research. Neutrons have greater linear energy transfer than gamma rays and are considered more dangerous radiation. Hence, the detection and determination of neutron dose is a very important and vital issu...
